Understand Your Condition
Researching your condition or group of conditions can be helpful in understanding which negative thoughts and behavior patterns you may fall into, and to watch out for them. Awareness is key in learning to manage your mental illness and minimizing its control over your life. It is important to be your own advocate and learn which therapies and treatments are available to you, and how effective others with your condition have found them to be.
Build Long Term, Healthy Habits
As humans, we are often ruled by our habits without even being aware of them. However, we do have the ability to change our habits by becoming aware of them. The habits we have now are not written in stone for eternity. Change is slow- but 100% possible. Try not to focus on your day to day struggles, but the long term trend of your progress. Engage in healthy activities such as exercise and surround yourself with positive and supportive people whenever possible. Keep track of your successes and celebrate them, so that you can reinforce good habits and weaken the bad ones that are holding you back.
Focus on What You Can Control
Every day, we have a choice on how we are going to spend our energy. Focus your energy on what you can control instead of letting your circumstances control you. Negative situations and unfortunate surprises will happen, and if we fixate on what we can’t control, we’ll make ourselves feel helpless, angry, and anxious. Our childhoods are not our fault, but our adult lives are our responsibility.
